basketball
One of the major spectator sports in Spain, basketball began to rival soccer in the late 1980s, attracting large audiences for live matches and for broadcasts on radio and television, especially after the Spanish team won a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics. Spanish teams compete regularly and successfully in the European League, Joventut (Barcelona), for example, winning in 1993–4, Real Madrid in 1994–5 and Barcelona in 1995–6 and for the Eurocopa which was won by Real Madrid in 1997. Within Spain teams compete in a Professional League, and for the Copa de Rey, the top teams being once again Barcelona, Real Madrid and Joventut. Women's teams compete in their own league, the leading club in 1996, for example, being Costa Naranja. In world championships Spain tends to rank in eighth or ninth place.
